Gymnasium
Jesmond
Set within the ground of a prominent Grade II Listed property and overlooking Jesmond Dene, this scheme proposes the repurposing of a former school Gymnasium. A 1960’s built eyesore has historically distracted from the beautiful host property (and its historic significance) and this has been exacerbated in recent times due to a substantial fire.
The project repurposes this hillside building as luxury ancillary accommodation to the main house. This includes garaging, office and fitness suites and estate maintenance facilities. The height of the former gymnasium building is significantly lowered to strengthen the visible relationship with the Dene. The stilted building is to be reclad in statement copper to compliment and contrast with the listed building. The heavily wooded hillside location ensures only limited, yet dramatic, views of the building can be captured from external viewpoints.
