Bracken Cottage
Ilkley
Situated near the Cow and Calf in Ilkley, this existing tired split level bungalow required a full transformation to bring it up to date and take advantage of the unique, uninterrupted elevated views of Ilkley and beyond to the North.
The design approach was twofold, to create a contemporary family dwelling while allowing the works to be easily phased. Two gable forms were proposed to the rear elevation of the existing. Phase 1 was the eastern gable, containing a new open plan kitchen/diner, utility and WC at lower ground level. A secluded lounge with wood burner was proposed at upper ground level, taking in the elevated views to the north. A new study was also formed along with a full renovation of the existing bedrooms and bathroom.
External works included a new stone-faced retaining wall to increase the width of the drive, which was finished with porous tarmac. New paving was installed throughout and new garden levels formed to the rear to maximize level platforms to the existing steep terrain.
Phase 2 will look to form the western gable, containing a new master bedroom at upper ground level and new snug at lower ground level.
