Bonas Hill
Northumberland

The former farm steadings of Bonas Hill has a great significance in representing the agricultural history of the area, however in recent years the ‘U’ shaped buildings had fallen into disrepair. The client’s vision sought to bring these significant buildings back into use as residential dwellings without losing the historic value of the buildings.

Not only has this been successfully achieved through innovative space planning, the design has also created exceptional areas of outstanding beauty. The magnificent principal reception lounge and sitting room celebrates the architectural structure with exposed beams and added volume. However, with carefully selected furniture and features, such as the beautiful fireplace and log burning stove, this in turn has created a homely and snug living space which has fabulous views out over the luxurious walled garden.

Each room has been carefully designed to enhance the history of the farm buildings whilst providing a modern comfortable home, examples of this concept can be seen throughout the entire building. A great example of this concept can be found in the main hallway - the repetition of the original structure can be seen creating rhythm, light and interest into the spine corridor in the dwelling. The original walls subtly divide the spaces up without hindering the function of the home, it creates visually stunning moments which highlight and complete this unique modern family home, setting it apart from other barn conversions.
